The groups are among the hundreds youth empowered by a community based organization Green Minds through a project titled Punguza Vipanga Jenga Amani , a project that set a good record on changing the lives of juvenile gangs through the strategic approach of inclusiveness .
The participatory grant making PGM 2 funded by the Netherlands Embassy through the JISRA project implemented by Kenya Community Support Centre KECOSCE transformed community members in its unique way .
Leader of one group Hamisi Ali Libondo said during the empowerment forums they realized that they can easily earn money by starting small businesses to combat unemployment and insecurity .
“ We registered a group of fifteen youth title “ Jitihada youth group” and applied for youth fund and that of National Government Affirmative Action Fund ,fortunately we managed get ksh 200,000 from NGAAF , we bought chairs and tents for business targeting various activities in Mtauga sub- county ,” said Mr.Libondo .
He affirmed that the project made them realize the numerous government empowerment programmes and opportunities for youth .
“Instead of attacking each other or attacking community members with pangas and machetes in retaliation ,we found it good for us to band together for development activities ,” Said mr.Libondo .
Matuga sub- county Youth officer Jawa Mwachupa said young people can easily earn money by starting small businesses in reducing idleness which contributes to insecurity .
“ Time has come for youth to make a change within their areas by forming youth groups ,they can engage in income-generating activities instead of chasing employment in government offices ,the government can not afford employing every youth ,” Said Mwachupa .
At the same time he applauded the two groups for making positive change after the empowerment forum by Green Minds organization .
“ Stop complaining about lack of employment and take personal initiative to improve your lives , the decision made by the two groups is very positive, encouraging and can lead to self –employment and improve their lives ,” Added mr. Mwachupa .
Before PGM 2 the area was grappling with increasing juvenile gangs ,Green minds has been at the forefront of fostering peaceful ,community driven solutions aimed at transforming youth and promoting harmonious coexistence .
In response to these challenges ,green minds adopted a non- violent participatory approach ,leveraging collaboration between diverse community stakeholders –including religious leaders ,youth and local law enforcement to create awareness ,mediate conflicts ,and promote the socio-economic well-being of communities by fostering positive change ,peace and security .
