All Eyes on Salim Kumaka as Dock Workers Union Election Race Intensifies.
Former Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Defined Contribution (DC) Scheme officer Salim Kumaka is faced with the challenge of whether to take paid leave pending retirement or contest for the Dock Workers Union (DWU) top post in union election slated for August 13.
The other option left to Kumaka who is KPA operations officer is for him to resign from the state corporation and take part in next month’s election where he enjoys government backing.
He has however remained mute about his stand as to whether he will join the race to replace embattled General Secretary Simon Sang or not.
The move will make the DWU election a two-horse race between him and former DWU assistant general secretary Mr Abubakar Abdillahi as they await the election board to be constituted.
The purported DWU General Secretary Suliman Otieno Owuor who enjoys the support of the Central Organization of Trade Unions COTU (K) has declined to comment.
The 5000 union members are already in an election mood after the government gave KPA approval to give the employees a bonus payment after
surpassing their target recording 2.24 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU’s) during the 2025/2026 financial year.
The sitting judge in Mombasa, Justice Ocharo Kebira had nullified the election of Suliman Otieno Owuor as the General Secretary of the DWU to replace embattled Simon Sang.
The judge had declared the election held in April after Sang was kicked out by the court as a sham and therefore null and void.
Justice Ocharo had said in his judgment that he has nullified Suliman’s victory.
